We are hypercontextualists. We diagram deep structures for creative problematics to project relevant futures. We are interested in spatial structure, sequence and experience; In cultural production as much as the products of our labour; In significance without a sole reliance on signification.

META ARCHITECTURE is a design practice focused on creating significant structures and spaces to crystalize the character of the places we inhabit. We aim to create bespoke solutions that are sensitive to our nuanced ways of life through design-based research, searching for opportunities in all scales, typologies, and narratives. Our projects imbue tropicality using form, materiality and landscapes, heritage through projected histories and narratives to create contextually sensitive spaces.

META ARCHITECTURE was founded by Adrian Lai in 2012, bringing in a decade of experience working in London with Wilkinson Eyre on projects such as Gardens By the Bay and Guangzhou International Financial Centre. We have since honed our expertise in residential and commercial buildings, adaptive re-use, and cultural and recreational spaces. In 2013, the practive was a finalist in the Wisma Geylang Serai Competition, focusing on building and promoting Malay culture and heritage in a new community and heritage centre. In 2014, we were the lead design consultant in the refurbishment and rebranding of SAFRA Mt Faber; and a design consultant and landscape architect for the Khong Guan Flour Milling’s A&A and extension. In 2017, we were appointed to design the interior fit-out for Khong Guan Limited’s head office at 2 MacTaggart Road to showcase the bridge between the old and new. In 2022, we were appointed the design consultants for the rejuvenation of CQ @ Clark Quay, focusing on uncovering the origins and hidden histories of the waterfront.
